Note: In the 78 rpm era it was common for record companies to press the same recordings in many countries for local markets, using local catalogue numbers. In Finland this practice did not exist before World War II, because there were no pressing plants in the country (with the exception of the small Sointu plant, which started in 1937). After the war, local pressing became common in Finland, too. Due to import restrictions which prevailed the end of the 1950s, it was difficult to obtain permits to import luxury goods such as records. However, the import of metal stampers was encouraged, because it promoted local record manufacturing. The agents of international record companies ordered stampers from their parent companies, had the records pressed in Finland and paid a licence fee to the parent company.

The most active companies in this field were Westerlund and Pohjoismainen Sähkö Oy (PSO), which shared the rights to the EMI labels in Finland. They pressed records in the following series: Columbia DYC (Levytukku Oy), His Master’s Voice TG (Westerlund), Odeon PLE/PLG/PLEX (PSO) & Parlophone DPY (PSO). Most of the records pressed in these series are well known international hits, which can easily be found today in their original form. However, there are also some uncommon items here. Particularly the Parlophone DPY series has some surprising choices, including some jazz records from the 1920s, which are equally uncommon in their original and Finnish pressings. Several other labels also appeared as Finnish 78 rpm pressings. These include Decca and Brunswick (with original UK catalogue numbers, but bearing the Rhythm trade mark), Columbia (pressed by Levytukku Oy), RCA, Karusell and Corona. (Part of the text above is quoted from the book “Suomessa Puristetut Ulkomaiset 78 rpm Levyt” by Rainer Strömmer, Yleisradio/Suomen äänitearkisto ry, Helsinki 1999.)

* = released in the Finnish series, otherwise in the import-series
